#4 Day 2 continued

Central Park continued...

How much is this cutey pie enjoying her merry go round! It was a real live carosel with creepy music and everything...
Central Park on a Saturday is like Vancouver during the marathon...insane! You risked your life trying to cross the street. One local pointed out that nobody absolutely nobody has a yard or a quiet street that they can run on in Manhatten. So...this is where everbody absolutely everbody goes for a run on the weekend (they close the road to traffic on weekends). Crazy!

Classic stretch of elm trees along a long path known as 'The Mall' as seen in hundreds of films...

OK this is not a shot I am proud of. But man this is the real thing! A real Central Park old school roller skater!! Yes, I said 'skate' not blade. Look at Danis face...pure distaste.

Love this little outdoor amplitheater...I can picture Shakespeare in summer...

WOW. Just look at this ceiling! And this is underneith a walkway in the park! The best part was the heavenly songs that came from beneith...

This family had a gift. The gift of song. It was hypnotic. Their voices drew us all in under the walkway to experience the beauty. All in synch...gospel with the most heavenly acoustics you could imagine...I wish I picked up their cd...

Another classic Central Park shot of the pond where everyone goes to row those little boats. Cheese!

Meters from where John Lennon was assasinated lay this simple memorial in the park. Fresh flowers and a crowd of visitors left me with an intense feeling...this was a great man.

And now...into the MET! Metropolitan Museum of Art to those who are in the know...

And on the rooftop their was a show...

And inside there was endless masterpieces...

A rest on the step after a loooong day of walking...

NY Update #3

On day 2 we got up early and took off for Central Park & the MET (after sipping on NY lattes and nibbling NY bagels with NY creamcheese in our sweet little NY apartment/suite) . It was to be a big day of walking. We walked until we thought our legs would fall off.

Here the girls are heading underground for their first subway ride ever...

I love this next shot in sepia...so NY!

And like WOW! This is what we were greeted with when we exited the underground at Central Park! The perfect photo op! I LOVE this shot and can't wait to blow it up for my wall...Classic Central Park pigeons with runners stretching in the background...who could resist?

NY Update #2

I call this one...'Bicycle'.

Here are some of my fav pics from our first day in NY. I still can't believe how much we packed into our few days!

Dani and I got up early and took a taxi down to the south end of Manhattan Island to the Seaport...waterfront full of action with water taxis, fitness classes, mega tourists, boat tours, bus tours, tall ships and skyscrapers.

The view from the seaport looking back at the business district...I love the wider angle of this shot and the extreme contrast between the old ships and the crazy modern buildings. And of course the sky co-operated and gave me a perfect glowing cloudy look.

Brooklyn st Bridge...the oldest one there...and the first superbig one built in NY. They didn't trust it so they sent elephants across to test it out. Brooklyn is the cityscape on the other side.

We spent the morning in line for cheap Broadway tickets and our efforts really paid off...we got 3 tickets for Chicago!!! Once we got our tix we went back to our suite and grabbed Jenni before walking to Grenwich Village for our 3.5hour walking food tour!

My beautiful sisters:) They are just so dam photogenic! When they aren't pulling faces that is! Here they are in front of a great deli we stopped at on the food tour.

Olive and Co. was a beautiful little specialty olive oil store that we stopped at. I loved the rows and rows of oils...

Look closely at this sign...and you will see something very cheeky. Who ever who put this marker here had a good sense of humour!

Here is the narrowest house in NY. (Or probably anywhere in the world!). It is only 2.5 doors wide and 3 stories high! It used to be a space between the other 2 buildings and the entrance to the horse stables behind. Now it is owned by a family who paid millions for it...and must have really narrow furniture. I would just love to get in there and see how they have decorated...

Fun with colourful doors...I love this one...lot's of people painted their doors brightly and they popped out against the monotony of brick walls.

Address: 2 and a 1/2. Not sure why but it is what it is. There are a lot of weird things in New York which made for lot's of good laughs and puzzled looks. Here is Dani, hoping that she doesn't get caught posing on this strangers stoop. Reminds me of the trouble we used to get her into when she was a wee girl (Nicki9doors)...younger siblings are such suckers and will do anything for their older sisters!

Crazy but true! There were plenty of pie shaped buildings to reflect the 6 or 7 street intersections. Again..I would love to get in there and see how they made use of this space.

Our last stop on the food tour was this wicked bakery that was packed with rows and rows of ooey gooey creamy dreamy treats...I had never seen anything like it!

After the food tour it was time to roll back to our hotel and get ready to go downtown for (gasp) dinner and our broadway show! Here are my fav shots from the evening...

This was a really weird (again) and really cool room ontop of Rockafeller Centre. We wen't up there to see the cityscape at night. These little panels of light would change colour and a crazy videogame like sound would go off when you moved or touched them. We had fun in there and took lots of photos.

Times Square. PS It is WAY bigger and crazier than it looks on TV! I thought it was just one intersection but it is like 4 blocks of crazyness...and it never ever get's dark here. It makes me think WHY THE HELL are we working so hard at being 'energy smart' and turning off our kitchen lights when we leave the room when THIS is what they are doing 24 7 in NY! Eeesh.

More nightlights. Every corner, every block, every street looked just like this...or brighter. This town NEVER sleeps.

And THAT, folks, was just the first day.

NY First Post: Our Hood

NY was amazing of course and I can't wait to go back! I want to share some of my favorite pics from the big trip but there are so many that I think I will break up the postings and take you along for the ride bit by bit...

All of these shots were taken within 1 block of our suite "Off Soho Suites" http://www.offsoho.com/. A HUGE thank you to Dale and Kristin for the great NY recommendation!

This is completely random and there is nothing artistic about this photo. It just sums up New York. Anything goes...fun...friendly...weird...bright lights...big colours...expect the unexpected!

Bowrey Street. A typical busy street at night. I like the glam gal in heels and a trenchcoat waiting calmly between lanes of flying traffic- all yellow taxi cabs of course. " I need a yellow taxi cab..." Look up that song by Matt Costa...so good and so reminds me of NY.

Here is my sista Dani looking oh so Sex in the City walking to the subway... They had the orange pylons out cause they were preparing to shoot a movie on our street that day:)

My First Apple Pie

Can't you just smell it? Can you see the steam rising?

I had to capture my first apple pie...made with apples from our little Shamrock tree! I was pretty nervous about making the crust. For some reason I have always thought that making a pie crust was some special gift that only certain people had...and that it was really really hard to pull off. Well, that's just hogwash! For all of you who have been scared to try your first pastry for fear of failure : Roll On I say! It was easy and looks pretty good so what the heck:) We will have to wait to find out how it tastes until Thanksgiving when it comes out of the freezer, however. Question is...can I actually wait that long?

Man does it smell awesome in my house right now!

These shots were taken on the Beautiful Bay Trail on Malcolm Island. This is a remote , West Coast Trail style route that covers 10kms round trip through amazing 1st and 2nd growth forest...through valleys, along ridges and overlooking the ocean below.

This will be my final blogpost for a couple of weeks! We are heading off to the land of big trees and big surf where there are no cell phones, no computers and no responsibilities! I will have plenty to post upon my return and plan to unload my photo card on you all when we get home around the 15th of September. I hope you have enjoyed my August experiment! It has been a wonderful experience for me and I feel that I am more connected to my camera and more inspired to take photos for the sake of taking beautiful and fun photos! Thanks for playing along! Who knows...I may just keep this challenge going...

The places your camera takes you... On this photography journey I have a heightened awareness of potential 'shots'. Even before the challenge I often found myself caught breathless at the sight of the perfect shadow, a glorious wash of light, or a magical feeling in the sky...all the while thinking....there is a 'shot' here. Now, that I am on a daily task to capture photos for the challenge I often find myself in 1 of 2 places:

1. With my camera...literally hunting around me in a 360 looking for some sort of shot. "I just need to find something here."

2. Without my camera...in front of the perfect scene with the perfect light. "I can't believe I don't have my camera!"

I am definitely carrying my camera with me more places more often- but sometimes I just don't have it there for those amazing shots. And so...they sit undeveloped in my minds eye. Like tonight...while driving home from Cumberland when I drove alongside a slope covered in tall white, dry grass...this slope was juxtaposed against a very dramatic dark cloud sky and it all just popped out at me all of a sudden! But, alas I was driving...and there was an impatient Mustang behind me so...I drove on.

Ok so it is official. I missed yesterday. I didn't make the time to get out my camera and set up one shot. I am cutting myself some slack, however, cause I worked from 7am until 7pm yesterday.

I am back at er and took 2 shots today to make up for it. Here is a shot from my front deck...about 20 steps from here:

Wow! Does the backdrop ever make this shot! I love taking pictures of these little rock piles on my front railing. But, the golden afternoon light streaming through a Japanese Maple sure takes this pile to a new level. Love it!

I packed along my camera at the ELM Womens Hiking clinic last night with the hopes of finding some inspiration for my today photo-in new terrain. The lighting was great for pics- the cloud cover limited shadows. Here is my favorite from the bunch. This bracket fungus was kindly pointed out by my participants as a potential subject...and it worked out nicely. This shot was a team effort- thank you ladies!

Todays Subject

This poor dragonfly didn't realize he was going to participate in a photo shoot this evening...but he was the perfect subject for my today photo. I have caught myself walking my dog loop each afternoon/evening hoping something new and exciting will jump out at me from my familiar surroundings. And, sure enough, there always seems to be something out there on that loop. Whether it is cool lighting, wind and movement or a unique subject awaiting my eye...I aways seem to be able to drum up a shot. So...this must be part of the today photo experience...expanding your creative eye. I think it is working?

Just came in from shooting these beauties in my back garden. The light was nearly gone when I remembered that I hadn't taken my photo for the day yet. I avoid using my flash like the plague...fear of the unknown I guess you could say. The flashes that come mounted on cameras are just so harsh that they always seem to give such an artificial glow to the subject.

I played with throwing the light a bit off centre and dimming the flash with a screen and this is what I came up with. The sepia tone really hides imperfections! Love it!

Here is a nice leaf...if it were October! Ahhh this little leaf landed on my back deck and I almost let out a scream...soooo not ready to see this yet as summer is just sinking in. He was just a little rebel out on his own so no need to freak out:)

I liked how the textures and colours of the deck and the leaf really pop in contrast.

The classic boot shot was taken at the end of a great hike up at Trent River. This is a must do if you are in the Valley. We did the 7km out and back route along the edge of the Trent River at the top of the ravine...400 feet up!

Today was a good day...no make that a great day.

An active start - 23km trail run with the ELM Half Marathon Clinic...and a very lazy finish - baking 'Survival Cookies' (thanks Joanne:) and reading my new book (Infidel) on the back deck bathed in sweet afternoon summer sunshine. So, here I captured my afternoon for ya...Can't you just taste these?

I set this shot up in front of my kitchen french doors- with afternoon light just flooding in. I couldn't resist temptation and had to take a bite before too long...

OK...I am announcing my personal photography challange ::

For the month of August (trial period) I am planning to take and post 1 photo everyday:) Yikes. Did I just announce that to the www? I have been inspired to tackle this challenge by a client who is also doing an August photo challenge (thank Laurel: http://selmanbl.blogspot.com/). My confidence is probably 4/10 on my ability to follow through...so follow along and send me your thoughts to help keep my motivation high over the coming 31 days...

The goal for now is to just take a picture everyday. It would be great if it represented that day but this is not part of the criteria. It would also be great if it were the best photo I had ever taken but this is not part of the criteria either! Of course, if I am out of town I will post-post my pics upon my return.

And HEY: if you feel like you need to dust off the old camera and get inspired to join my challenge then be sure to send me links to your pics too!

Sunrise Chicks

Karen McKinnon caught on film for once! Nestled in amongst the flowers I caught her in a brief moment of stillness:)

Just got back from a 6:30 am 'Chicks' shoot down at Goose Spit Park. This is by far my favorite time of day to shoot as the early morning sunlight highlights everything with a golden hue. Karen called all past Chicks together for a bonus session this morning and we spent a couple of hours playing with our cameras and trying out new things. I was particularly interested in shots with movement and grilled Karen for ideas and techniques.

Classic Comox Valley Glacier shot. BUT...notice the brutal new clearcut in the foreground. Boomer (local photographer for Valley promotions) must just hate that.

Grasses kissed by morning sunlight. These are my favorite shots to take...zoomed in with tonnes of detail (morning horizontal light is perfect for that).

I think I might puke from spinning after looking through 20 shots like this! This one is super cool though- I like how the centre is still and the rest of your world is just spinning like mad. How did I do this you ask? You'll have to join Chicks Who Click in 2009 to find out!

The petting zoo in Beacon Hill Park, Victoria is just the best place ever. I had a thing for this peacock and we couldn't get enough of each other. He was a real poser! I was feeling all National Geo and he was walking the catwalk for me. Perfect.

I highly recommend heading there for a photo shoot next time you are in Vic!

Birthday Dinner

Nothing but class for my 32nd birthday. A beautiful warm evening called for a sushi picnic down at the Spit in Comox. No table? No problem. These big tires did the trick:) Not award winning photography but I found some beauty and some humour in these shots taken on June 10th:)

A Lesson in Portraits

Our June photography lesson was one that I desperately needed and one that I apparently need a few more of. Portraits. I have always avoided structured photo portraits as I have never been comfortable with setting them up. The whole idea of bossing people into a natural looking pose seems completely impossible to me. So, I was hugely relieved to learn a few tricks and tips from the pro, Karen McKinnon http://mckinnonphoto.squarespace.com/display/ShowJournal?moduleId=1378999&SSScrollPosition=247 at our Kitty Coleman Woodland gardens shoot.

I had the chance to torture my fellow classmates and place them in ohsonatural poses amongst the flora and fauna of the gardens. If at first you don't succeed...try try again. And so I did...and I have...and I will. The more I boss people around into portrait poses, the easier it gets. And the more comfortable I get, the more comfortable my victims-um-subjects get. So here are my first few attempts at set up portraits...gasp...these are not my best shots but I am hoping they will be a benchmark to compare against in the future. Hang on...don't go anywhere...stay tuned for the portrait evolution...gulp.

Evening Inspiration

Last night we had the most incredible thunder and lightening storm:) Just as I got into bed a massive crack ripped open the sky and the aftershock of thunder rolled through my belly. Completely awesome. But it was right after dinner that the sky began to fill with dark clouds and the evening light changed into that wonderfully magical studio-style backlight.

I hit the backyard in search of some shots and found a shock of colour as some new flowers had appeared-the first of my poppies and iris' were open and reaching for the electric sky.

Here is what I came up with. A steady hand and slow shutter speeds had to do as I didn't want to run inside for the tripod and risk missing the light.

These were taken with a 4.8fstop and anywhere from 60-150 shutter speed. Flower season has arrived in my garden and I will have plenty of inspiration for the coming months!

Again...I had to have this shot. I feel greedy even now saying it but I do get these urges that can only be selfishly fulfilled by 'taking' the shot and forever holding onto it as one of my posessions. I did my best without a macrolense-I still only have the 18-55m lense that came with my D40 and I really miss my old macro from the old school Cannon. But alas...I got to fulfill my little violet urge and created what I see as a mysterious, rich image.

Lines on the wall

The late afternoon lighting was just way too cool to pass up on this one. There was a shot there but I didn't quite know what it was going to be. I just had to have the light. Low evening light was slicing through our bamboo blinds in the bedroom and it painted itself on the hallway wall. Kinda cool...but that's about it:)

Line Ups are Everywhere

The more I search for line ups the more I find they are, of course, everywhere. Above, my bathroom buddahs are lined up and having a good laugh at life. Below is a calm scene in my back trails of mom and babe in nature. She was squawking like crazy at me as I pulled a Lorne Green in the grass to get this shot. Too cute.

Class is in two weeks and I must find the best line up by then...

Warmth

Earlier in the year we were asked to capture the term: Warmth in our photo class. It was a great focus word as it kept cozy thoughts of warmer days in our minds and helped to withstand the final days of winter. I experienced a wonderful AHA moment in my basement one afternoon. I went down to stoke the fire, and there was a streamful of warm afternoon light pouring in through the one tiny window in the basement. No other light existed and it was a beautiful sight-whatever it touched it lit up in a warm glow. It happend to be striking an old ratty rocking chair and my cat Tesu thought it was the best place to lounge in the house. So, here she is. My challenge was slowing down the shutter speed enough to capture the small amount of light in the space. That's when the 'light' went on and I realized what my new tripod is for...AHA!!!!! I was able to slow it right down to 30 or 60 and capture my wee cat-when she stayed still of course. Lesson learned!

Line Up

Happy Tuesday!

I am working on my May photography assignment and trying to capture the term 'Line-Up' with some sort of style. Here is my first attempt using my Beyond the Kitchen door cooking class as my subject. These bowls were ready to devour dessert: rum drenched warm mango & pineapple chunks over homemade vanilla bean ice cream. I was too busy eating to capture the finished product-sorry!

There has never been, nor will there ever be, a life free from problems. It is not the presence of problems but how we tackle them that determines the quality of our lives.

Magnolia's make photography easy. This shot was taken at the Filberg Lodge in Comox around 10:30am on a sunshiney day. I was working to capture a story for another classmate-about the beautiful and tragic cycle of life and death. Here, this glorious magnolia flower has just reached her peak and is showing the first signs of decline-tiny brown marks and soft petals. In the forground is a tiny bud who is just beginning his journey and so the cycle continues. Thank you to Sandy for sharing her inspiration. I like how the backlight gives this flower a heavenly glow.

Balance

Reach your state of balance...Find your 'Equilibrium'. These are phrases I often use to motivate and inspire my fitness clients with my training company: Equilibrium Lifestyle Management (ELM). When I was creating the vision for my company (while sipping latte's with my girlfriend Jen, over long beach walks along Dallas road in Victoria) this concept of finding one's unique state of balance was the lifebreathe of my dream. It is what I truely believe in. Balance is dynamic-it is everchanging, adapting, molding and evolving to our current reality. The key is reaching a balance between life, love, work, health that results in a happy, joyous life. This is the most individual state that I can think of as every one of us finds joy in different ways. Find your joy. And follow along as I share my own joy of photography with you. My second passion to Fitness is in fact taking beautifully balanced photos. I hope you enjoy them and look forward to your feedback!
